We were staying at a cottage in Torrin on the south of the Isle of Skye so an hour and a half journey lay ahead of us for the trip to the Quaraing. In a week of mostly rain I planned a day forecast to be dry and sunny for this knowing we would only have one opportunity.
On arrival it was clear that the forecast had been wrong and that low thick cloud was the order of the day. Having briefly considered leaving my camera gear in the car for this walk I despondently resolved to take it, once again shouldering the heavy load on the off chance that conditions may change.
A few minutes into the walk sunlight briefly broke through the cloud lighting a spot on the Trotternish Ridge and my hopes were raised a little. Perhaps there may be a chance.
The walk out to this point is not particularly strenuous as it is a ledge walk rather than a climb but does require a good head for heights at some points. I already new roughly the view point I was after having seen pictures previously and found a spot to position the tripod just off of the path to avoid walkers getting in the picture.
This was now an exercise in patience. The thick low cloud persisted but on the odd occasion sun light would break through in small areas, usually on the distant ridge and sometimes on the closer ridge but it was a long wait before sunlight burst through onto both areas.
This had been a good lesson learned. I had envisaged an altogether different set of conditions with broken cloud, sun and clear distant views. Instead what had first appeared to be poor conditions had given me my favourite image of my week on the Isle of Skye.
